LEVEL * FLAT * PLANE * EVEN * SMOOTH
这五个词都指有一个平整的水平面（these words mean having a surface without bends，curves，or irregularities）
level指和地平线水平的平面（LEVEL applies to a horizontal surface that lies on a line parallel with the horizon ）：
flat指表面没有明显的弯曲或者凹凸不平（FLAT applies to a surface devoid of noticeable curvatures，prominences，or depressions）：
plane的词义比flat强（completely flat），它所指的平整度就好比平面中的任意两点都能连成一条直线（PLANE applies to any real or imaginary flat surface in which a straight line between any two points on it lies wholly within that surface）：
even就是level和flat的同义词，没什么特别的（EVEN applies to a surface that is noticeably flat or level or to a line that is observably straight）：
smooth指光滑的平面（SMOOTH applies especially to a polished surface free of irregularities）：

level作动词讲时，有夷平、摧毁的含义（the verb level also means to flatten or destroy）：
flat作形容词时，除了指平的，还可以指less than lively：表达汽水没气儿可以用flat（a flat soda has no bubbles），表达枯燥单调可以用flat（If your speech falls flat，no one was excited），表达市场萧条不景气或者价格无涨落可以用flat（flat sales for the month * prices remained flat * a flat market），表达躺平的可以用flat（If you get mugged you might choose to lie flat on the ground）。flat在音乐方面的义项为降半音符号（a flat note is just below the right pitch）。
当然，flat作公寓讲的时候，为英式表达（美式表达为apartment），这个义项大家应该很熟悉。
plane作名词时，即指飞机又指木工刨，作动词时，指将某物刨平滑（As a verb，to planesomething is to make it flat and smooth）。需要注意的是，plane和plain的区分：plain作形容词时指simple，做名词时指平原（flat land）。
even作形容词时，除了指平的，还指相等的（even also describes a balance like when you give all the kids an even amount of candy），心情平稳温和的（even describes something that is calm，like a person who has an even temper）。在数学中，even指偶数的（an even number is one that can be divided by two without a remainder）。even作副词时，表强调：The adverb even is used to emphasize something，like when your friend doesn't even see you waving frantically at her.
smooth既有形容词义项，又有动词义项：使平滑（Caught in a wind storm? Better smooth out your hair when you head inside.）* 通常指男子奉承而随和的，但并不一定是真诚的（Got a friend who's good with the ladies? Try imitating his smooth moves.）* 缓解问题（Need help to smooth out a dispute between two friends? Invite them out for coffee and offer to help them smooth out their differences.）

smooth away指解决问题（to get rid of problems or difficulties）：
smooth over指缓解问题（if you smooth over problems, difficulties etc, you make them seem less serious and easier to control, especially by talking to the people who are involved in the problem）：
