原田治郎1982年的英文著作《The Garden of Japan》(日本的庭园) 引用冈仓天心《The Book of Tea》（茶之书）里的一段话，解释日本茶庭所追求的境界是：
“the solitude of a newly-awakened soul still lingering amid shadowy dreams of the past, yet bathing in the sweet unconsciousness of a mellow spiritual light, and yearning for the freedom that lay in the expanse beyond. ”（新苏醒的灵魂，还停留在过去的梦的暗影中，但是浸浴在柔和的灵光的甜蜜的无意识中，且渴望无限彼方的自由的孤独。）
