The U.S. increased its oil imports from Russia before the sanctions took effect – by as much as 43 percent between March 19 and 25 – Russia Today reported, citing data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Despite being the leading country to impose sanctions and warn India against Russian energy, the U.S. importers stockpiled crude oil from Russia using the ban's 45-day exclusion period for existing contracts, importing 148,000 barrels per day in March.

Meanwhile, the price for European countries to wean off Russian energy keeps going up, affecting the cost of living for ordinary people. Protests over rising prices have broken out in the UK, Spain, Italy and Greece.
