Pulp stones: an enigmatic pathologic entityThis is the first post of a series in which I will provide histomorphologic appearance of pulp stones. Pulp stones in the pulp chamber and “diffuse calcifications” in root canals are a common occurrence in carious teeth, restored teeth, and apparently intact teeth. Despite a number of microscopic and histochemical studies, the exact cause of such pulp calcifications remains largely unknown. Apart from the obvious endodontic problem of hindering access to root canals and their subsequent shaping, it is not known whether they are of any other significance. The following sections (obtained from a molar restored several years before) were stained with the trichrome Masson technique, specific for collagen.
