Dear listeners, I am Manling, thanks for tuning in to this audio book.
When I was a student of English language and literature many years ago, I came across “The Good Earth” by the Nobel-prize winning author Pearl S. Buck.
I was struck by the ability of this American to bring to life the world of Chinese farmers living in her time. Her book reads as if she was down in the dirt and toiling alongside them.
She made Chinese farmers immortal with her pen, and these characters secured her place as one of the most celebrated writers of the 20th century.
Her prose is as undecorated as her characters, yet it has an unexpected healing effect. It reminds us that we are vulnerable and cannot live a life devoid of suffering; instead, we need to come to accept the calluses we grow along the way, and to keep on living.
Reading the book “The Mother” decades later, having become a mother and going through my own share of pain and loss, I once more draw from the pages of her work the love of life and the longing for hope that Pearl Buck imbued in her characters.
Life is worth living so long as we can believe that daylight will follow the darkest night. Pearl Buck’s simple yet beautiful rhetoric always brings me hope and joy, and I am excited to share it with you.
Thanks again for choosing our podcast Books and Beyond.
