Along with Niagara Falls and Igaguasu Falls, Zimbabwe’s famous Victoria Falls is known as one of the world's three largest waterfalls. Victoria Falls is also called Mosi-oa-tunya by the local Lozi residents, which means "thunderbolt fog". The whole waterfall is over 1,700 meters wide; at the falls, the river plunges over a sheer precipice to a maximum drop of 108 meters. The falls is twice the width and height of Niagara Falls. Before it reaches the waterfall, the vast Zambezi river flows slowly through the wide, shallow basalt riverbed, and then suddenly falls from a 50-meter cliff into a deep gorge. The main waterfall is divided into several strands by the inter-river rock islands, with waves splashing up to 300 meters away.
