Besides the regular ones, Dunhuang murals feature a type of flying horses, regarded as an auspicious creature. The unique depictions are seen in both Mogao and Yulin grottoes. These winged horses seem to have a connection with the depictions in Persian and Central Asian traditions, and might be the result of cultural exchanges along the ancient Silk Road.
