✏️老外常说的stay afloat是什么意思？

afloat 为形容词，本来是「漂浮着」的意思。但在商业领域，afloat被用来形容「经济上周转得开的，不欠债的」。

常用搭配为：keep (sb / sth) afloat，stay afloat。

考研英语二 2011年里就考过这个词：
🌰Many papers stayed afloat by pushing journalists overboard.许多报社通过裁员来维持生存。

再比如《纽约时报》一篇关于中美经济关系的文章这样写道：
🌰Yes, Americans use iPhones and personal protective equipment produced in China, but they also attend universities that after decades of underinvestment are kept afloat by Chinese students who pay full tuition.
的确，美国人使用中国生产的iPhone和个人防护设备，但美国人上的大学几十年来都资金不足，也要靠中国学生支付全额学费才能维持下去。
