Manet's work was accepted at the Salon for the first time in 1861, with this portrait and the Spanish Singer, on view in the next gallery. The reception of these paintings reassured his parents of his ability to embark on an artistic career. His father's health was failing at the time of this work and he died two years later. Manet remained especially close with his mother, who lived with him and his wife.
