爵士乐爱好者中最具争议和分歧的形式出现在60年代。融合了爵士乐即兴创作和令人兴奋的摇滚风格。在60年代末之前，爵士乐和摇滚乐是分开的。但很快，随着摇滚音乐变得更加融合，这两个类型交织在一起，爵士乐界的一些人开始放弃hard-bop音乐，开始自由地进行实验。
