Shielded BT-7, produced by plant No183, Kharkov, August 1941.
Work on the armoring of the BT was initiated by the decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR of June 28, 1941. The next day, order No268ss was issued for the People's Commissariat of Medium Machine Building. Signed by S.A. Akopov, Deputy People's Commissar, the order resumed work on the T-26 armour, but at the same time work on the BT was launched. According to the order, plant No183 was obliged to prepare drawings for the BT-5 and BT-7 shielding for the Ilyich Metallurgical Plant of Mariupol by July 8. The thickness of the screens was 30-35 mm, that is, the total thickness was at least 45-50 mm.

Работы по экранировке БТ были инициированы постанавлением СНК СССР от 28 июня 1941 года. На следующий день вышел приказ №268сс по НКСМ (наркомат среднего машиностроения). Подписанный С.А. Акоповым, заместителем наркома, приказ возобновлял работы по экранировке Т-26, но одновременно запускались работы и по БТ. Согласно приказу, завод №183 обязали к 8 июля подготовить для Мариупольского металлургического завода им. Ильича чертежи экранировки БТ-5 и БТ-7. Толщина экранов составляла 30-35 мм, то есть суммарная толщина составляла не менее 45-50 мм.
