Greetings parents of 9th grade historians!

Second semester is now under way!

What are we doing? This week we are learning the origin story of the Roman Republic. Much like our own nation the Roman Republic had its origin in throwing off the tyranny of kings and creating a constitutional state. Notions of liberty, property, and independence were as central to the Roman Republican as they are to us today. Your student will track the development of the cultural values that came to define Roman identity and compare those value to the traditional identity pillars of Americans.

What is coming up? Our next task will be to read a Roman description of their constitution and then create a detailed charts to show how the whole system worked. We will refer back to this system as we explore all the policies and politics of Roman Republican history. The Roman constitution was used by the founding fathers of our own country as a template and the parallels are many. This should provide opportunities for fun conversations with your student. I will attach the reading packet below which begins with Polybius' description of the Roman Constitution.

What can you do? Please read along with your student and engage them in conversation. This will be a golden opportunity to help your student lay a foundation for political understanding as they near adulthood. Very soon your student's political life will begin, and this could be a very formative time for you to speak into.
