Jacky Ko Chung-kit, vice-chairman of the Y. Elites Association, which has over 1,300 members and advises the government, said Richard Li’s attendance “as one of the representatives of the Chinese business community” raised eyebrows given the tight spot the conglomerate is finding itself in over the ports sale. “This would have been something to be proud of, but CK Hutchison’s proposed sale of overseas port assets, including Panama, has sparked controversy in recent days,” Ko said. “We can’t help but ask: since it is a Chinese enterprise, shouldn’t it be China’s interests that should be safeguarded? So, should the Li family think twice about selling the ports?

“Chinese companies should stand on the perspective of national interests ... Foreign enterprises are still firmly optimistic about the Chinese market and actively integrate into the tide of China’s development, should the Li family go against the current?” Ko cited close to 30 American companies that took part in the conference, with multinationals such as Apple, Pfizer, FedEx, Siemens, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Samsung also attending. The controversy surrounding the CK Hutchison deal has continued to snowball, with leading Hong Kong political figures weighing in over the past days.
