Written by the Tang-dynasty (618-907) poet Chen Zi'ang, these lines from Song of the Youzhou Terrace echo across time. The poet, standing on an ancient tower, gazes into a vast, empty expanse, evoking a sense of the universe moving on, indifferent to the fleeting lives of men.

No sages of old before my eyes,
no travelers of the future to arise.
I ponder the endless vastness of time,
