我作为一个过来人,强烈推荐各位,学习一种外语,至少是英语。这不仅是功利性的沟通工具,更是彻底改变你的思维,打开一个新世界的门。
语言即思维,思维即世界!
Language is Thought!
Language is not neutral, nor is it merely a tool—it is an integral part of thinking itself. It’s like pencils and Chinese brushes: while both are tools for drawing, the final artworks they produce are entirely different. Pencil sketches emphasize precision; Chinese ink paintings convey atmosphere and spirit. Both are forms of art, yet fundamentally distinct. For calculation and reasoning, you need the precision of a pencil; for shading and ambiguity, the brush glides over with intentional vagueness.
From my own experience, the concept that “language is not neutral” is profoundly important—because language represents thought, and in fact, is a way of thinking. It forms the framework of the thought process, just like how different CPU architectures lead to different efficiencies and directions. The structure of the language you use shapes the structure of how you think.
I’ve come to realize this through my own journey: learning another language—especially a Western language like English—can even change your way of thinking. When I first went abroad, immersed in a foreign language environment, my naturally introverted and quiet personality made me seem even more inarticulate. It was a painful feeling—having things to say, but lacking the words or courage to say them. Yet, as I was forced to work and communicate in another language, I gradually began to think in that language. Eventually, I even dreamed in English. At the time, I didn’t realize it—but the shift in language had fundamentally changed the way I thought.
So as someone who’s been through it, I strongly recommend learning a foreign language—at the very least, English. It’s not just a utilitarian communication tool; it can transform your thinking and open the door to an entirely new world.
Language is thought. Thought is the world.
