9 The Hermit/Syd Barrett

A brilliant mind that went into retreat. In this day and age where most rock stars drink and fuck and get high till they’re 85, the early retirement of Syd Barrett seems to make him stand out from the rest, although he did not choose him retirement any more than John Lennon chose his. The Hermit signifies introspection, solitude and self-discovery. As the leader, creative force and best-looking member of early-era Pink Floyd, Syd led the band through its 1965-1968 experimental psychedelic phase, shaping their debut album. However, his increasing mental instability, likely worsened LSD, started to lead to erratic behaviour, like stare blankly on stage, play the same chord repeatedly, or refuse to perform altogether. By 1968, Pink Floyd had to replace him with David Gilmour and continue without him. After that, Syd recorded two cult-classic solo albums before completely leaving the sight of the public, retreating to solitude in Cambridge, giving nothing but alarmed bald photos to the paparazzi for the following decades. Syd’s life was a slow slide from glimmering brilliance to silent madness, both signifying an inward journey and leaving countless mysteries to the world, making him a true hermit.
By the way, the second choice for this card was Brian Jones. I think these two had a lot in common in terms of life paths.
