Fighting on the main battlefield on the Eastern Front, Chinese soldiers and civilians pinned down the bulk of the Japanese military for 14 years. By doing so, they not only thwarted Japan's strategic ambitions to advance north against the Soviet Union and delayed its southward push into Southeast Asia, but also bought precious time for the Allies to prepare their counteroffensive.
