Gazing at the Moon

On the fifteenth, a wheel of jade hangs high;
By the sixteenth, its phase shifts in an eye.
Frost-glow by my bed chills the marble stair,
The moon turns her golden mirror down the long corridor.

Cassia shadows sway, sifting shards of light;
Stars lean low o’er fields, we pillow on the wind.
Chang’e pounds herbs in silence, the cold palace still;
Wu Gang’s ax falls, cassia fragrance drifts afar.

On moonless night, dark curtains drape the sky;
A newborn crescent hangs above the dusk-bound hill.
Wax and wane follow heaven’s way—
Why judge “loss” or “gain” with mortal sight?

Dawn and dusk, ebb and flow, all by law abide;
Wordless, clear light cycles on its eternal round.
Lotus blooms wither, swept by flowing waters;
Meetings and partings revolve in human world.
