Germany engineers design liquid metal robots that change shape like mercury
In a robotics facility outside Munich, German engineers have unveiled something out of science fiction — small robots made from a gallium-based liquid metal that can morph, split, and reassemble like living mercury. These shapeshifting bots are being developed for search-and-rescue and deep medical use.
Each robot can pass through tight gaps, stretch into thin threads, or reform into solid tools within seconds. The transformation is triggered by precise magnetic fields that rearrange the metallic molecules. The bots can carry micro-sensors and cameras, navigating debris or even moving through damaged pipes to perform repairs.
When cooled, the metal stiffens, allowing the robots to lift objects several times their own weight. When warmed, they return to liquid, flowing through cracks or sealing leaks from within. The blend of flexibility and strength opens a new category of adaptive machines.
Researchers are testing how these robots could navigate inside the human body — traveling through the bloodstream to deliver medicine or remove blockages. Early simulations show they can reach places where traditional instruments fail.
For engineers, it’s more than robotics — it’s a glimpse into materials that blur the line between machines and life, between fluid and form.
