The "Six Feet Alley" is narrow; yet, it is also "wide"—when people show courtesy to one another, they can walk far and achieve greatness together.

The Tongcheng Six-Foot Lane 六尺巷 is a famous historical alleyway located in Tongcheng, Anhui Province, China. It is renowned not for its size, but for the profound story and moral lesson it represents.

📜 The Story of the Six-Foot Lane

The tale dates back to the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) during the reign of Emperor Kangxi:

The Dispute: The Zhang family, whose member Zhang Ying was a high-ranking official (Grand Secretary/Minister) in the capital, had a property boundary dispute with their neighboring Wu family over a narrow strip of land.

Seeking Intervention: The Zhang family in Tongcheng wrote a letter to Zhang Ying in Beijing, asking him to use his powerful influence to intervene and force the Wu family to concede.

The Poem: Zhang Ying, upon receiving the letter miles away, chose not to use his power oppressively. Instead, he wrote back a simple, thought-provoking poem:

“A letter arrives, concerning a wall’s small span,
Three feet conceded, what harm is done?
The Great Wall still stretches for thousands of kilometers today,
But the first emperor of Qin Dynasty is long gone.

千里修书只为墙,让他三尺又何妨?
万里长城今犹在,不见当年秦始皇。

The Compromise: The Zhang family, understanding the deep meaning—that power, wealth, and even walls are fleeting compared to virtues like tolerance—voluntarily moved their wall back three chi (an old Chinese unit of length, roughly 1.1 feet).

The Lane is Formed: The Wu family, deeply touched by the official's humble gesture, reciprocated by moving their own wall back three chi as well. This created the six-foot-wide (six chi) alley between the two properties, symbolizing mutual respect and humility.

Today, the cobblestone lane is a significant historical and cultural tourist attraction in Tongcheng, continuing to teach the traditional Chinese wisdom of courtesy, harmony, and neighborly kindness. http://t.cn/AXL73KAG
