在伍尔夫的《一间属于自己的房间》里，伍尔夫谈到了“钱”与“空间”对女性的重要性。
她指出，在“钱”与“选举权”之间，前者可能更重要。
有了钱，你就不用在意别人的指责，在意风言风语；有了钱，你就不用取悦男人，也不用恨男人，心态当然会好很多；有了钱，你就有独立思考的能力。
所有那些琐碎的困惑，从本质上来说都是缺钱，经济不独立。

Five hundred a year stands for the power to contemplate, that a lock on the door means the power to think for oneself.
