On this joyful Christmas Day, I’d love to share a little story from traditional Chinese culture with children in Sydney — the story of Fei Fei, a gentle mythical creature who helps take worries away.
Fei Fei — the Worry-Soothing Divine Beast
Born in Mount Huoshan, north of Mount Niushou, Fei Fei steps gently from myth into the human world.
Its main vocation is to relieve people’s worries—
and occasionally, it moonlights as something irresistibly adorable.
According to The Classic of Mountains and Seas, Fei Fei resembles a civet cat.
It has white fur, a long white tail, and a soft mane along its back.
The ancient text records that keeping Fei Fei close can ease sorrow and dispel anxiety.
As an ancient divine beast carrying thousands of years of cultural heritage,
Fei Fei has gradually become a symbol of traditional Chinese wisdom and emotional healing.
Gentle by nature and close to humans,
Fei Fei represents the classic cute and comforting type—
a creature that heals not through power, but through presence.
In folklore, it is often regarded as the ancestral spirit of cats:
calm, observant, quietly empathetic,
and always able to sense human emotions before words are spoken.
Fei Fei reminds us that in the oldest stories,
the most powerful beings were not fierce or loud,
but warm, companionable,
and skilled at turning worry into peace.
