南通博物苑坐落于风景秀丽的濠河之畔，由著名爱国实业家、晚清状元张謇于1905年创办，是中国最早的一所公共博物馆，中国博物馆事业的发祥地，国家首批一级博物馆。博物苑以“设为庠序学校以教，多识鸟兽草木之名”为初心，开创“馆园一体”的独特模式，让文物与园林相映成趣，兼具教育与自然认知价值，成为中国博物馆发展史上的重要地标。展馆有南馆、中馆、北馆三座主要建筑。2005年，由两院院士吴良镛教授主持南通博物苑规划设计和单体方案，博物苑总面积扩展为7万多平方米，新建现代化新展馆，即“主馆区”，建筑面积6,330 平方米。南通博物苑现有藏品约5万余件，分历史文物、民俗品物和自然标本，其中以反映地方历史的文物最具特色。
Nantong Museum is located on the bank of the scenic Hao River. Founded in 1905 by Zhang Jian, a renowned patriotic industrialist and Zhuangyuan (top scorer in the imperial examinations) of the late Qing Dynasty, it is China's earliest public museum, the birthplace of China's museum cause, and among the first batch of National Grade I Museums. Guided by its founding aspiration of “Establishing schools for education and enriching knowledge of birds, beasts, plants, and trees,” the museum pioneered the unique “museum-garden integration” model, where cultural relics and gardens complement each other perfectly. It combines educational value with natural learning significance, becoming a key landmark in the history of China’s museum development. The museum complex comprises three main buildings: the South Hall, Central Hall, and North Hall. In 2005, Professor Wu Liangyong, an academician of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, led the overall planning, design, and individual building schemes for Nantong Museum. The total area was expanded to over 70,000 square meters, and a new modern exhibition complex—the Main Gallery Area—with a floor area of 6,330 square meters was constructed. Currently, the museum houses more than 50,000 collections, categorized into historical artifacts, folk objects, and natural specimens, among which relics reflecting local history are particularly distinctive.
