After the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo married the Tang Princess Wencheng and Princess Bhrikuti of Nepal, he had two temples, Jokhang and Ramoche, built in Lhasa. The custom of circumambulating Jokhang Temple took hold, and this gradually carved a circular path around it. Over time, this path evolved into a center of religious culture, commerce and residential life. Today, Barkhor Street largely retains the original layout of the ancient city. The typical local buildings lining the streets preserve their historic charm, and the centuries-old tradition of circumambulation persists. The area continues to attract large crowds every day, made up of both locals and visitors from around the world.
