Built in two tiers, the case is simply beautiful, glossy black lacquer touched with red and gold. The lid and outer body are formed over hemp cloth, while the inner tiers are carved from wood. Open it and it becomes a miniature dressing room. The upper layer held three pairs of mitts, a silk scarf, a belt and a slim silk mirror pouch stitched with longevity motifs. Below, nine cavities are carved into the base, each fitted with a small box. Inside were cosmetics and rouge, silk powder pads, combs and a needle case. It is storage, elegance and daily ritual, all engineered into one object. Lacquer painting, gold leaf and engraved lines weave across the surface, turning a practical grooming kit into a statement of Han refinement.
