📜Classic Verses:「
• In "Climbing Leyeyuan," Du Mu opens with "A lone bird vanishes in the vast clear sky, Eternity sinks into this very place," depicting the vastness and solitude of gazing from a high vantage point. A lone bird gradually disappears in the sky, as if the river of history is carrying everything away. The following lines, "Look at the achievements of the Han dynasty, No trees stand in the Five Tombs as autumn wind blows," cast the poet's gaze upon the Han imperial mausoleums. Once glorious, now only the autumn wind blows through desolate ruins. This strong contrast expresses the vicissitudes of historical rise and fall.
Qujiang Grandeur
• As a royal garden of the Tang Dynasty, Qujiang Pond is not only a scenic spot but also a cultural landmark. In the Tang Dynasty, this was a place where poets and literati would gather, and also a place for celebrations after passing the imperial exams. New scholars would participate in the "Qujiang Drinking" banquet here, with the Emperor personally attending to grant a feast. The grandeur was called the pinnacle of Chang'an literary circles. Imagine the scholars wearing green robes, toasting by Qujiang Pond, composing poems—what a magnificent scene that must have been.
Leyeyuan Reflection
• As the highest point in southeast Chang'an during the Tang Dynasty, Leyeyuan was where ladies and scholars would climb high on the Double Ninth Festival to admire chrysanthemums and compose poems. This was not only a place for enjoying scenery but also an important venue for literary gatherings. Du Mu climbed here, perhaps with friends, admiring the view. The emotions in his poem reflect the common mentality of the scholar-official class of that time—the nostalgia for the grandeur of the High Tang and the worry about reality.
Five Tombs
• The Five Tombs are the mausoleums of five Han emperors: Changling (Han Gaozu Liu Bang), Anling (Han Huidi Liu Ying), Yangling (Han Jingdi Liu Qi), Maoling (Han Wudi Liu Che), Pingling (Han Zhaodi Liu Fuling). These tombs witnessed the glory of the Han Dynasty, and in Du Mu's pen, they have become symbols of historical rise and fall. The five words "No trees stand" write out the desolation of the tombs, and also write out the poet's deep sigh at the changes of history.
