Zhuanxu was a highly accomplished leader in ancient China. Historical records describe him as "tranquil yet profound with strategic insight, knowledgeable and well-versed in governance," meaning he possessed a calm demeanor, rich in foresight and strategy, and was thoroughly acquainted with state affairs. One of his most renowned achievements was appointing ministers Zhong and Li to "separate the realm of gods from that of humans," thereby rectifying the chaotic intermingling of divine and mortal affairs. This established specialized officials responsible for communication between deities and humans, bringing social order into regulation. He established his capital at Diqiu (present-day Puyang, Henan) and reigned for an extended period, exerting a profound and lasting influence.

Gun, according to legend, was a descendant of Zhuanxu (said in some versions to be his son). During the reign of Emperor Yao, he was tasked with controlling the widespread flooding. Gun primarily employed the method of building dikes to block the waters, but after nine years, his efforts proved unsuccessful. Ultimately, Emperor Shun held him accountable, condemning him to death at Mount Yu. His son, Yu, took over the monumental task of flood control, adopting a strategy of dredging and channeling the waters, which ultimately led to success. Gun's story is imbued with tragic heroism—a figure who, despite failure, paved the way for his successor's triumph.
