At eventide I sought an old couple’s door,
And found their hearth, and leave awhile to stay;
Yet ere the night had settled fully o’er,
An officer came hunting men away.
The old man climbed the wall and fled from sight,
As fear will teach the weakest feet to fly;
The old wife stepped out into lantern-light,
While I stood still, and hardly dared to sigh.
How fierce he shouted, how his anger burned;
How hard she wept, as though her heart were torn;
I heard her speak, and toward his fury turned:
“My three sons serve far off, on watch, forlorn.
One son sent word, a scant note, weakly laid;
The other two lie newly slain in war.
The living steal their breath, day by day, and fade;
The dead are gone, past any help, no more.
“Within this house there’s none to answer now,
Save one small babe that at the breast doth cling;
His mother stays, she cannot leave, I know,
Yet out and in she goes in rags, poor thing.
“Though strength is spent, though age hath made me weak,
Take me this night, and let the others bide;
The summons presses, urgent, so they speak,
And I shall dress the soldiers’ morn, provide.”
The night ran long; their voices died to naught,
As if the eaves had swallow’d up their breath;
Yet from the dark a stifled sob was caught,
A sound that clung like sorrow, close to death.
At break of day I took my staff and went;
The road lay pale beneath the waking sky.
I turned, and bade the old man farewell then,
And left him there alone as I passed by.
