【原文】子游曰：“子夏之门人小子，当洒扫、应对、进退，则可矣，抑末也，本之则无。如之何？”子夏闻之，曰：“噫！言游过矣！君子之道，孰先传焉？孰后倦焉？譬诸草木，区以别矣。君子之道，焉可诬也？有始有卒者，其惟圣人乎！”
【译文】子游说：“子夏的学生，做做打扫卫生、言语应答、接待宾客这类工作还可以。但这些只是末节，根本（先王之道）却没有，这怎么行呢？”
子夏听到后，说：“啊，子游说错了！君子之道，哪一项先传授？哪一项后传授？就像草木，区分只是为了分门别类。君子的大道怎么能随意歪曲呢？能够有始有终的，大概只有圣人吧？”
【英文】Ziyou said,"Zixia's disciples are pretty skillful in cleaning the floor and sweeping the yard,in receiving and greeting visitors,or in taking and relaying messages.However,these are but trivialities,which in no way could prepare them to discourse on the supreme principles of virtue and righteousness."When Zixia learned this,he said,"Alas,Yan You is indeed mistaken!Which part of the supreme principles of virtue is to be taught first or next is just like distinguishing between flowers and trees.It is all wrong to misinterpret the supreme principles of virtue.To be able to illustrate such fundamental principles in a systematic way is something only a sage can accomplish!"
