Being misunderstood is an emotion people tend to experience a lot. The real question is “how do you respond?” People may dislike or doubt my sister but how she responds is who she is. One thing about Azzi, she’ll always fight until she can’t. She’ll get back up after you knock her down. She will do everything in her power to give what she has left. And then some. She is STRONG.

I’ve seen my sister walk across tons of stages and each time it’s always been a different emotion. From graduations, to sports panels and now the WNBA. As Azzi’s name was called I felt joy. A joy so deep my bones started to ache. My cheekbones hurt from smiling so much. This was the first time a pain felt so good. But behind that big ole smile was her little brother. A brother who watched her navigate her trials and tribulations. A brother that has seen her raw emotions. A brother that was ready to grind with her. A brother who understood. She might not look like me but she feels the emotions I have felt. She has bled the same blood as all of us. She wanted to be great even if it came with the hardships.

Growing up and playing the little brother/helper role not only grew our bond but made Jon and I realize that everything takes hard work. The work that this woman put in is crazy! Rain or shine she was willing to work. People question what’s so special about our family, and I would say that it’s the determination and love that we pour into each other. From being born into different families to grinding with each other just so we can see each other shine.
