How it works:

Friction is the Hero: The steel cables aren't "wound" around a drum; they sit in the grooves of the sheave. The friction between the cables and those grooves is what moves the car.

The Counterweight Balance: Out of view is a counterweight that balances the car, meaning the motor only has to overcome the weight of the passengers and friction—not the entire weight of the elevator itself.

Redundancy: Those multiple cables aren't just for show. Each individual cable is often strong enough to hold the entire car on its own.
