The US Justice Department announced on Thursday that a US Army soldier linked to the capture of Nicolas Maduro has been indicted for placing bets – resulting in winnings of more than $400,000 – related to the ouster of the former Venezuelan leader.

Gannon Ken Van Dyke, a master sergeant in the US Army Special Forces, leveraged sensitive classified information in the weeks prior to Maduro's capture on January 3 to place wagers on the prediction market Polymarket. He bet that US military forces would intervene in Venezuela and that Maduro would be removed from power.

The 38-year-old Van Dyke has been indicted by a grand jury at the Manhattan federal court on charges of unlawful use of confidential government information for personal gain, theft of nonpublic government information, commodities fraud, wire fraud and making an unlawful monetary transaction.
