前两天有同学问了我一个问题：play erhu中间究竟要不要加the？

这个问题的简单回答是，play erhu或者play the erhu都是正确的，但是后者会更加常见。

国内中小学英语教研界常年流传着这么一个说法：西洋乐器前面要加定冠词the，而中国传统乐器名称前不加the，这是英语对特定文化乐器的特殊表达方式。

实际上这种说法完全是无稽之谈，应该是以讹传讹的结果。

如果你查看原版的语法材料，你会发现并没有这种对西洋乐器和中国传统乐器的分开规定。

英语里面对于“弹奏乐器”，统一用法都是play the XX，其中就包括二胡、琵琶和古筝等传统乐器。

比如BBC就有这样的句子：

Phil Cunningham duets with Na Wang, who plays the erhu (a kind of two-stringed Chinese fiddle) in the Black Bamboo Park, Beijing.

不过play erhu这种用法也是对的。这跟西洋乐器还是传统乐器关系不大，而是美式英语的一种用法习惯。

美式英语整体上更倾向于简化表达，省略不必要的冠词。比如英式英语里面说play the guitar，到了美式英语里面就变成了play guitar。类似的用法还有play (the) piano

《韦氏高阶英语词典》里面也有一个经典例句：

I'm learning to play the guitar. = (US) I'm learning to play guitar.

在美国媒体上也可以找到play erhu的例句。比如下面是美国媒体The Los Angeles Times的句子：

Other members of the group play erhu, a relative of the violin, pipa, a sort of lute, yangqin, a hammered dulcimer, and various traditional flutes.

参考翻译：乐团的其他成员则演奏二胡（类似小提琴的一种乐器）、琵琶（一种类似鲁特琴的乐器）、扬琴（一种用槌敲击的扬弦乐器），以及各种传统笛类乐器。

虽然play erhu和play the erhu都是正确的，但是从谷歌Ngram语料库的结果来看，play the erhu这一用法更加常见。

我们在使用的时候也推荐加上定冠词the

不过需要注意的是，如果我们要表达的是“在XX乐器上演奏XXX乐曲”，此时要说：play XXX on the XX，定冠词the不能省略。

比如“某人用钢琴弹奏古典音乐”要说：somebody plays classical music on the piano

又比如Global Time上面有这么一个句子：

Hu Yiying, a famous Chinese huqin (a traditional Chinese stringed instrument) player… climbed to the Jiatianyu section of the Great Wall in Huairou District in Beijing, and played the song on the erhu, a kind of huqin.

这里用played the song on the erhu来指“在二胡上面演奏这首曲子”，这里的定冠词the是不能省略的。
