Indian wildlife scientist and conservationist Dr. Krithi K. Karanth has been named the 2026 Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year by the National Geographic Society — becoming the first Indian to receive this prestigious honour.

As CEO of the Centre for Wildlife Studies, Dr. Karanth has devoted nearly three decades to protecting India’s rich biodiversity while promoting harmonious coexistence between people and wildlife. Her work focuses on reducing human-wildlife conflict involving elephants, tigers, leopards and other species through science-based and community-driven solutions.

Through initiatives such as “Wild Seve”, her team has helped thousands of rural families access support and compensation for crop and livestock losses caused by wildlife. Her conservation and education programmes have reached thousands of villages, schools, farmers, and young people across India, encouraging greater environmental awareness and protection of nature.
