The rituals of sport: quiet ceremonies that unfold before an athlete steps onto the pitch, before the roar of the crowd. What is behind the scenes, in the locker rooms and away from the game, hidden to the spectator yet undeniably crucial to performance? Even the simplest acts can be rituals in their own right, which, for some, might parallel a religious practice. Perhaps that spiritual connotation isn’t misplaced, as it’s been found that these rituals have the power to unlock something higher within oneself. Sharpening oneself with intention creates the ‘flow state’ to self-actualise and transcend.

This photographic series draws inspiration from these pre-competition rituals, visualising them as futuristic archetypes. Preparation is rarely accidental, rather it is honed through repetition and belief.
