The word “Chinook” comes from the name of the Chinook people, an Indigenous group that traditionally live along the Pacific Northwest coast, where they experience warm, moist winds blowing in from the ocean. Eventually, this word was transferred to the warm, dry downslope winds that occur on the eastern sides of the Rocky Mountains.
