Originating from Chinese tradition, dragon boats were handcrafted from teak, weighing one to two tonnes. Beautiful as they were, they were quite difficult to maintain. Modern racing dragon boats use fiberglass. They're strong, extremely rigid, and weigh only 138 kilograms. One of the first dragon boat builder's in Europe was a German shipyard called BuK. Its founder Andreas made them lighter and faster, but never compromised on the essentials: dragon head, dragon tail and the drum. The drums still come from China.
