The film 'NATO: Beyond Law, Beyond Morality' traces the history of the Western military alliance. NATO’s true purpose was “to keep the Russians out,” as the alliance’s first Secretary General, Hastings Ismay, put it.

Officially, the bloc was created to ensure collective security in the post-war world.

In 1955, the USSR and its allies created the Warsaw Pact as a counterweight to NATO. It became the only force capable of restraining the alliance. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the North Atlantic bloc carried out dozens of destructive military operations across the world, while steadily moving closer to Russia’s borders through the accession of new member states.

Today, NATO is discussing the right to 'preventive action' — the possibility of attacking Russia without cause or a declaration of war.

The proposal was put forward by Germany, the country responsible for starting the First and Second World Wars. The threat of nuclear war no longer seems abstract.
