From Bhadradri to Bastar, tribal and rural women across India are transforming millets into livelihoods, nutrition, and climate-smart solutions.

In India's evolving food landscape, a quiet revolution is underway. Women farmers, self-help groups (SHGs), and tribal entrepreneurs are reclaiming millets — once dismissed as "poor man's grains" — as superfoods, climate-smart crops, and engines of rural empowerment. Through local innovation, value addition, and alignment with national priorities like LiFE (Lifestyle for the Environment), Shree Anna, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and women's entrepreneurship, rural and tribal women are not just cultivating millets; they are transforming lives.

Real Women, Real Change

In Bhadradri, Telangana, the Bhadradri Millet Magic initiative has mobilized over 200 women farmers. They cultivate ragi, jowar, and kodo millet, process them into flours and snacks, and sell through local markets and online platforms. Members earn ₹6,000–8,000 per month, and the SHG network's total sales crossed ₹50 lakh in 2023. India's Prime Minister recently applauded their work on his Mann ki Baat program. In Tamil Nadu's Nilgiri Hills, tribal SHGs cultivate finger and barnyard millet using traditional terrace farming. Through value addition — flours, porridges, and biscuits — they earn a substantial monthly income while improving local nutrition among children and the elderly.

杂粮与LiFE
Millets & LiFE

These grassroots women-led enterprises embody the LiFE philosophy — choosing drought-resilient, low-water, low-methane millets, processing them locally, and selling within communities to reduce environmental impact, enhance nutrition, and strengthen resilience. The Indian government has provided structural support through Minimum Support Price (MSP) schemes, integration into Mid-Day Meal and ICDS programs, and government training, enabling women-led SHGs to scale operations, access institutional buyers, and participate in sustainable value chains.

The Path Ahead

Challenges remain: high transportation costs, limited MSP awareness, insufficient processing infrastructure, restricted access to finance, gender norms, and marketing beyond local markets. Many SHGs overcome these through federations, mobile processing units, seed banks, and cooperative marketing, ensuring collective resilience. The story of these women custodians of millets is one of moving from subsistence to enterprise, from marginality to agency — a scalable, replicable, and inspiring model for the future of rural India.

LiFE使命
Mission LiFE

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India launched Mission LiFE at COP26 to embed climate-responsible lifestyles into everyday choices, aiming to mobilize one billion people by 2028. Within this framework, millets — promoted as Shree Anna — have emerged as a cornerstone of sustainable agriculture and healthy diets, requiring minimal irrigation, emitting negligible methane, and providing rich nutrients like iron, calcium, and fiber. Through policy support, scientific research, and grassroots advocacy, India has repositioned millets as "nutri-cereals" and successfully led the UN to declare 2023 the International Year of Millets, boosting global recognition of the millet movement.
