But biology turns out to be much more interesting.
Research suggests that the follicular fluid surrounding an egg releases chemical signals that attract some men's sperm more strongly than others. In laboratory experiments, certain eggs attracted up to 40% more of their "preferred" sperm.
What's fascinating is that this preference doesn't seem to be about which sperm is "better." Instead, it may be linked to compatibility between immune system genes (known as MHC), which play an important role in human immunity.
Of course, this doesn't mean an egg is consciously "choosing" a partner. These are biochemical interactions shaped by millions of years of evolution, and scientists emphasize that fertilization is influenced by many different factors.
Still, it's a reminder that conception isn't simply a race won by the fastest swimmer. It's a remarkably sophisticated biological conversation between two cells.
