In the defining imperative of an era beset by national peril and the quest for survival, the majority of writers chose the pen as their blade, fixing their gaze on social realities and the fate of the collective. Lu Xun dissected the national character with an unflinching scalpel; Mao Dun mapped the full sweep of society through sweeping narrative; yet Yu Dafu forged a path apart – centering on the personal lyric and carving out a realm of distinctive singularity beyond the mainstream, becoming a most unmistakable "maverick" of Republican-era literature. This "maverick" was by no means detached from his age; rather, through a more intimate lens, he breathed vivid, individual vitality into the veins of modern literature.
