Yesterday it was 20 years since the ‘famous’ Reading away game. I kept this post for today as everyone seemed to be talking about it yesterday...
It is undeniably the day that greatly impacted Premier League, football fans , my closest and of course myself.
After 20 years there are many ways to look at it but let’s put the whole story into perspective...
The recovery was hard at the beginning and I had big doubts sometimes, if I would return to playing, but i have learnt some valuable lessons along the journey...
I realised how privileged i was to be a football player in the best league in the world.
I realised how much i love the game.
I realised that your dreams and your life can end in a second and therefore you should live everyday with purpose because it could be your last and not waste a second.
I learnt that my brain controls everything and learnt to listened to my body.
I started training the brain even more using cognitive training , visual training , learnt the techniques to release stress and tension through breathing exercise.
I added completely different level of cognitive difficulty and multifunctional exercises to my goalkeeper sessions with Christophe Lollichon ...
I realised It could have been the end of my career so I started thinking about what would I do if that was the case and became aware I was missing some specific qualifications and specific education for jobs I would be interested in (—> so i did it when i could to be ready when i retired )
I learnt that every problem has a solution if you look out for it and never give up.
It confirmed to me that I am ready for any challenge and that I love being challenged.
...The iconic helmet was born ... :))
Premier League changed the rules around the players medical safety and the paramedics were present at every game ever since ( having saved many lives in the process ).
To conclude my thoughts I would like to say thank you again to the medical teams and the Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for giving me the chance to live and allowing me to carry on playing the game i loved, break some records , made millions of fans happy through winning trophies...
And the most precious part - that i could become a father!
So people remember that even in difficult moments you can find hidden gems that are worth every effort!
You noticed i did not mention Stephen and that me or him never really spoke about it ...that’s because when we hugged after the game at Stamford Bridge we agreed not to talk about it too much and leave it behind us ... we keep the word.
Wish you all the best
Big Pete
