When the environment changes, do you adapt the path or try to move the rock? 🪨🚗

This three-photo comparison shows Tunnel Rock in California's Sequoia National Park across nearly 70 years (1952, 1975, and 2020):

1952: A classic sedan easily glides underneath the giant granite archway.

1975: A wider truck makes it through, but clearance is getting tight.

2020: The road under the rock is completely closed to vehicle traffic.

What happened?
The rock didn't shrink or sink. Instead, our vehicles grew larger, taller, and heavier over the decades. As trucks and SUVs began clipping the granite, the risk of structural damage—or a catastrophic collapse—became too high to ignore.

In 1997, the National Park Service faced a strategic choice: alter a historic natural formation, or reroute the road entirely. They chose to bypass the rock, creating a safer main road while preserving the landmark as a pedestrian attraction.
