Then in 1981, at the World Canoe Championships in Nottingham, British organizer Mike Haslam was trying to promote his event, but the media showed little interest. So he swapped the photos and sent them pictures of dragon boats instead. The phones exploded. Seventeen teams quickly signed up. That was the beginning of dragon boat's European story.
