During the Dragon Boat Festival, villages across southern China's Guangzhou keep a centuries-old tradition: They row decorated dragon boats to visit friends and relatives in neighboring communities. Back when roads were scarce, rivers were the highways. Invitations traveled by boat, and host villages welcomed guests ashore with tea, pastries and feasts. Today, modern highways crisscross the city, yet the dragon boats still glide along the old creeks. Beneath the drums and cheers, it's a living bond of fellowship and trust – renewed each year, on the water.
