Entropy Panel Announced for FIPS 'n' Chips 2026
At FIPS 'n' Chips 2026, the expert panel "Where Randomness Begins: Physical or Not?" will explore the foundations of cryptographic random number generation and the different approaches used to create, evaluate, and validate entropy sources.
The panel brings together experts to discuss physical and non-physical noise sources, entropy estimation, health testing, and what happens when real-world behavior no longer matches the assumptions behind a noise source's design.
The discussion will consider approaches including NIST SP 800-90B, SP 800-90C, BSI AIS 20/31, and NIST IR 8446, examining a deceptively simple question at the heart of cryptographic security:
If we trust our keys, what gives us confidence in the randomness behind them?
Come and learn how the same design can satisfy two sets of requirements: those of NIST and the German BSI.
