Ever notice why hatchbacks almost always have rear wipers… while most sedans don’t?
It’s not random design preference.
It’s pure aerodynamics.
In a hatchback, the abrupt rear shape creates a large low-pressure wake zone right behind the car. Airflow recirculates there, depositing dirt, dust, and road spray directly onto the rear window. Sedans, with their longer, sloping trunks, push that dirty wake further back—so the rear glass stays cleaner.
The short video below (simulated with AeroJAX) makes the difference crystal clear: airflow patterns, dirt deposition zones, and pressure fields side-by-side.
A simple, elegant reminder that great engineering often hides in the details we take for granted. What’s one other “why does it look that way?” car design choice you’ve always wondered about?
