1939年，年仅13岁的布卢门撒尔为躲避纳粹德国的迫害，以犹太难民的身份来到上海。他和家人在上海生活了8年，直到1947年移民美国。听他讲述二战期间及战后在上海虹口犹太人聚居区生活期间那些关于失去与求生的故事，令人动容。布卢门撒尔部长即将年满101岁，他非凡的记忆力和对往事的生动讲述，让这段重要的历史更加鲜活。

他在美中交往史上占有特殊地位。1979年，在我们两国正式建交后不久，他以美国财政部长的身份访华，并代表卡特总统出席了美国驻华大使馆的开馆仪式。”

“It was a true honor to welcome former Treasury Secretary Michael Blumenthal and his wife Barbara back to Shanghai.

He first arrived in Shanghai in 1939 at age 13 as a Jewish refugee fleeing Nazi persecution in Germany. He and his family lived in Shanghai for 8 years until they immigrated to the United States in 1947. It was moving to hear his stories of loss and survival during his life here in the Hongkou Ghetto of Shanghai during WWII and thereafter. Secretary Blumenthal is nearly 101 years old and his remarkable memory and vivid recollections bring this important chapter of history to life.

He holds a special place in U.S.-China ties. In 1979, shortly after our countries established diplomatic ties, he traveled to China as Treasury Secretary and represented President Carter at the official opening of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. ”
