Robert Taylor, born in 1940 in St. John the Baptist Parish, comes from a family rooted in this land for generations; former sugarcane fields and farmland are now encircled by massive chemical facilities. Watching his mother, brothers, cousins and eventually his wife be diagnosed with cancer has left him devastated. Not far away in St. James, Sharon Lavigne founded a grassroots organization to speak up for her community, fighting corporate expansion and regulatory failure so people can live with dignity.
