Sciences Behind 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2 Minutes
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai “for the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.”
In 1953 a physicist wrote a three-step recipe for how one hand of a molecule could take over. Kagan ticked step two in 1986. Soai ticked step three.
Chemistry learned to choose a hand. Many molecules come in two mirror-image forms, and life uses only one. Kagan found that purity doesn't add up in a straight line; Soai found a molecule that copies its own hand.
